Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has been appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as Secretary of State, and has been confirmed by the Senate.
Senate
Representative Kirsten Gillibrand has been appointed by Governor David Paterson to fill the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Senator Gillibrand will serve in this seat and run in a 2010 special election to fill the remainder of Senator Clinton's term which expires in 2012. The next regularly scheduled election will take place in 2012.
House of Representatives
Representative Gillibrand has resigned her House seat to be sworn in as Senator. Her House seat is now vacant, and a special election will be scheduled to elect a new representative to fill the remainder of her term. The date of this election has not been determined. Candidate selection has begun. During the vacancy, Representative Gillibrand's district offices and Washington office will remain open and available to serve constituents needs, operating under the direction of Office of the Clerk.
